Billy Baker

About Billy

Billy is a pianist and composer based in London

Studying the piano and violin from a young age, Billy achieved distinctions in all his piano examinations and aged just 16 performed live at Symphony Hall Birmingham and Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club in London. Alongside performance, Billy developed an early interest in composing, inspired by classical and contemporary styles.

Studying music at the University of Manchester, Billy began composing more with early works performed and recorded as part of coursework and collaborations. Billy later went on to achieve a first-class degree and a distinction in his LTCL diploma.

In September 2024, Billy premiered his original composition ‘Rain Waltz’ at St Matthew’s Church, Northampton in aid of The Lewis Foundation. Present were Lee and Lorraine Lewis (founders of The Lewis Foundation) and former Mayor and Mayoress of Northampton, Cllr Paul Joyce and Mylissa Joyce.

Billy has a close connection with Romantic repertoire, especially the works of Chopin, Schubert, and Rachmaninoff. His own music is also influenced by classical, contemporary and film genres, and he draws inspiration from composers such as Ludovico Einaudi, Alexis Ffrench, and Yiruma.

Billy has studied under Mr Mark Pescott (Dip ABRSM, LRAM, ARAM, FTCL), Pamela M. Rawlinson (LRAM, ARCM), Ben Andrew (BMus(Hons) Trinity College of Music, LTCL, FTCL) and Richard Casey (RNCM, PPRNCM and founder-member of the contemporary music ensemble, Psappha).

Billy has also been guided in masterclasses led by Graham Fitch, Anna Markland (Winner of BBC Young Musician 1982), Lukas Geniušas (2nd prize winner at Int. Chopin Piano Competition 2010), Martin Roscoe, and Nikki Iles.

Billy’s debut EP Piano Reflections composed in collaboration with Rutik Joshi will be available from 12 September.
